Uganda’s Domestic Airlines raise fares as jet fuel prices surge

Domestic airlines in Uganda are raising ticket prices after a sharp surge in global jet fuel costs, piling pressure on the country’s tourism-dependent aviation sector.

Carriers operating internal routes have announced a new fuel surcharge effective May 1, 2026, with passengers expected to pay an additional $25 to $50 per flight leg, depending on the route.

Industry players say the move is unavoidable as fuel—already the single biggest operating expense—has become significantly more expensive due to supply disruptions linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

“The surcharge reflects the current fuel market conditions,” one airline operator indicated, noting that the increase is being applied across the sector to cushion airlines from escalating costs.

The impact is expected to be most visible in Uganda’s high-end tourism segment, where domestic flights are widely used to access national parks and remote destinations. With fares rising, tour operators warn that travel packages could become more expensive, potentially affecting demand.

The price shock mirrors a wider global aviation crisis. Jet fuel prices have surged dramatically in recent weeks following the conflict in the Middle East, disrupting supply chains and pushing oil prices higher.

Across Africa, airlines are already feeling the strain. In some markets, operators warn that revenues are no longer sufficient to cover fuel costs alone, highlighting how vulnerable the industry is to sudden price spikes.

In Uganda, airlines say they will continue to monitor fuel trends and could review the surcharge if prices stabilise. But for now, travellers should expect higher airfares, fewer discounts, and a more expensive flying experience in the months ahead.

The development underscores a harsh reality for the aviation industry: when fuel prices soar, passengers inevitably foot the bill.
