An international cruise vessel docked at the Port of Mombasa on March 19, 2026, in what officials are describing as a significant milestone in Kenya’s growing ambitions as a premier cruise tourism destination along the Indian Ocean circuit.

The vessel, carrying hundreds of passengers and crew from various parts of the world, was received by representatives from the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and leading tour operators, a show of unity among stakeholders keen on positioning Kenya as a competitive and sustainable tourism hub.

Speaking at the reception, Mr. Tonny Kibwana, representing the Managing Director of the Kenya Ports Authority, said the Port of Mombasa continues to serve as a critical gateway linking international visitors to the country’s rich tourism attractions. He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to delivering efficient port services and seamless experiences for all arriving visitors.

“The continued growth of cruise ship calls at this port is something we take great pride in,” Kibwana said.

The Kenya Wildlife Service used the occasion to unveil an attractive incentive for cruise visitors. Ms. Elema Hapicha, speaking on behalf of the Director General, announced that KWS is offering group discounted park entry rates for both cruise passengers and crew, opening doors to some of Kenya’s most celebrated destinations among them Amboseli, Tsavo East, Tsavo West, Shimba Hills, and the Marine Parks.

“We want every visitor who steps off these vessels to experience the best of Kenya’s wildlife and natural heritage,” Ms. Hapicha said, expressing confidence that visitors would leave with unforgettable memories.

The discounts, available through tour operators handling cruise tourism, form part of the broader Cruise-to-Park Initiative  a government-backed programme designed to bridge port arrivals with inland tourism experiences and encourage visitors to extend their stay beyond the coast.

Pollmans Tours & Safaris, one of the key operators facilitating excursions for cruise visitors, also welcomed the development. The company’s Finance Director, Mr. Lambodara Hotta, praised the partnership with KWS, saying the collaboration was already making a tangible difference in the quality of experiences offered to international visitors.

“The discounted rates and the strong partnership we have with KWS are helping us deliver truly unique and memorable safaris across Amboseli, Tsavo East, and Tsavo West,” Mr. Hotta said.

Stakeholders at the event were unanimous in their view that sustained cooperation between the Kenya Ports Authority, Kenya Wildlife Service, and the private sector holds the key to unlocking the full potential of cruise tourism in the country.

As the visitors departed for their Kenyan adventures, they were sent off with a message that has become synonymous with the country’s tourism brand:“Karibuni Kenya — The Origin of Wonder.”
