Kenya’s tourism sector officially began preparations for the 16th edition of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) on Wednesday, unveiling the milestone event during a Partners Breakfast held at the Nairobi Serena Hotel.
Touted as Africa’s premier tourism marketplace, MKTE 2026 is scheduled to take place from October 6 to 8, 2026, in Nairobi, under the theme “Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future of Tourism.”
The launch event attracted a full house of government agencies, destination partners, private sector leaders, and industry stakeholders, demonstrating a shared commitment to positioning Kenya as a leading global travel destination and to making the 2026 edition the most impactful yet.
Organizers showcased the success of last year’s expo, which they said set a new benchmark for the event. MKTE has evolved beyond a traditional trade fair into what the Kenya Tourism Board describes as a pan-African tourism, investment, and content platform.
MKTE 2025 drew 7,691 delegates, an 84 percent increase over the previous year. It featured 365 exhibitors (a 12 percent growth) and 239 buyers, of whom 206 were hosted buyers. The event facilitated 10,852 business-to-business meetings, marking a 43 percent increase, generated KES 102.1 million in revenue (a 21 percent year-on-year rise), and achieved 21.8 million digital impressions.
Feedback from participants indicated strong confidence in the platform, with 96.9 percent of buyers reporting that their objectives were met and a 90 percent satisfaction rate among exhibitors. The B2B meetings platform matured significantly last year, welcoming 595 participants and achieving a 92 percent satisfaction rate for meetings.
Organizers credited the Tourism Investment Forum with enhancing MKTE’s role as a platform for genuine investment and policy dialogue, extending beyond its traditional function as a trade fair.
This year’s Expo will feature stronger private sector participation in planning and coordination, collaboration in vetting and approving Hosted Buyers, destination management company-led familiarization trips, and an expanded program for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) buyers.
For 2026, organizers are setting ambitious targets, aiming for more than 400 exhibitors, over 10,000 attendees, more than 160 quality-vetted buyers, over 10,000 B2B meetings, more than 10 seminars, and over 30 familiarization trip itineraries.

During the launch, Magical Kenya Chief Executive Officer June Chepkemei emphasized the tourism sector’s broader economic ambitions, framing MKTE as a stepping stone toward a much larger national goal. “We are aiming for 4.22 million arrivals and KES 759.6 billion in revenue as we work toward a KES 1 trillion tourism economy for Kenya,” Chepkemei said.
These figures translate into a goal of 4.22 million international tourist arrivals and KES 759.6 billion in tourism revenue for the 2026/27 financial year, which is part of a broader roadmap that the Kenya Tourism Board believes will position Kenya as a KES 1 trillion tourism economy by 2027/28.
According to figures presented at the launch, the country is targeting 2.79 million tourist arrivals, 5.14 million bed nights, KES 564.39 billion in revenue, and a 79 percent brand awareness index for the 2025/26 financial year. By 2026/27, those goals increase to 4.22 million arrivals, 6.95 million bed nights, KES 759.60 billion in revenue, and an 82 percent brand awareness index, before rising further in 2027/28 to 5.5 million arrivals, 7.5 million bed nights, KES 1 trillion in revenue, and an 84 percent brand awareness index.

As the countdown to October begins, organizers emphasized the focus on building stronger partnerships and creating new opportunities for exhibitors, buyers, and stakeholders from around the world. As one message shared at the launch stated, the journey to MKTE 2026 continues.
