Uganda’s national carrier, the Uganda Airlines, is under investigation by the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) in liaison with the State House Anti-Corruption Unit over alleged abuse of office, embezzlement of funds, and falsification of accounts linked to the n its financial transactions.
In a letter dated January 7, 2026, addressed to the Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Airlines, CID said that it is currently investigating a case of abuse of office, embezzlement of funds, and false accounting against some officials of Uganda Airlines relating to financial transactions.
The CID letter requested documents intended to aid investigations and asked the airline to submit certified copies of key operational, financial, and procurement records.
Among the documents requested is the approved National Airline Business and Implementation Plan, and the airline’s budget for the F/Y 2024/2025.
Investigators have also demanded the contracts committee minutes that approved the purchase of Boeing Aircraft.
CID further requested procurement files for several companies, including Mixjet Flight Support Services, Associated Energy Group, Nyanzi Tours and Travel, and Aircraft Leasing Services (ALS) Limited.
Police are also seeking the procurement file for the construction of Uganda Airlines’ offices in Entebbe.
In addition, the document demands the internal audit report for the FY 2024/2025, as well as revenue accounting and ticketing records, banking and cash receipts, and expenditure and supplier transactions for fuel for FY 2024/2025.
CID has also asked Uganda Airlines to submit a list of companies that supported the launch of the Uganda Airlines London Route,a flagship international service that was launched as part of the carrier’s expansion strategy.
Detective Superintendent of Police Nakatudde Winniefred has been assigned to receive the requested information.
The investigation places Uganda Airlines, a state-owned enterprise revived in 2019 with substantial government funding, under heightened scrutiny amid ongoing efforts by the State to tighten accountability in public institutions.
This investigation comes at a time when Uganda Airlines has been facing mounting operational and financial pressure, marked by a spate of flight cancellations and growing public frustration.
In recent weeks, passengers have taken to social media to protest abrupt cancellations, delays, and what they describe as inadequate communication from the airline.
The disruptions have coincided with continued financial strain at the national carrier, which has consistently reported losses since its revival, largely attributed to high operational costs, aircraft maintenance, fuel expenses, and route expansion.
The combination of service disruptions and sustained losses has intensified scrutiny over the airline’s management and use of public funds.
By press time, Uganda Airlines had not issued an official response to the CID inquiry.
