UWA Arrests Three Suspects in Suspected Poisoning of Hyenas at Lake Mburo National Park

In a significant breakthrough in wildlife protection efforts, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force, has apprehended three individuals linked to the tragic poisoning of seven hyenas in the Kaburabutembero area of Lake Mburo National Park.

This operation, prompted by actionable intelligence, took place on June 21, 2026, in Akayanja Sub-county, Kiruhura District.

The detained suspects have been identified as Kayomberera Steven, 55, Nayamuba Dickens, 40, and Lotee Joseph, 30. Both Kayomberera Steven and Lotee Joseph hail from Rwekishwaga Village, while Nayamuba Dickens is from Rwakobo Village.

All three are residents of Rwakobo Parish, situated within the Akayanja Sub-county. Their presence in the vicinity of the park and connection to the crime have raised critical concerns among wildlife conservation advocates.

The gruesome incident, which involved the deliberate poisoning of the hyenas, an essential part of the park’s ecosystem, has sent shockwaves throughout the community and raised alarms within conservation circles.

Hyenas play a vital role in the ecological balance of Lake Mburo National Park, and their loss not only disrupts this balance but also poses broader implications for biodiversity in the region.

Currently, the suspects are being held at Kiruhura Central Police Station, where they await further investigations.

UWA officials emphasize the importance of such operations in their ongoing battle against wildlife crime, underscoring a firm commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of wildlife harm face justice.

The commitment of UWA reflects a broader initiative to protect Uganda’s rich natural heritage amidst increasing threats from poaching and habitat destruction.

As investigations continue, local authorities and wildlife advocates remain hopeful for a resolution that will deter future incidents and safeguard the future of wildlife in the region.
