For decades, travellers heading into the Mara through Talek Gate have known the Talek River bend as home to Mara Leisure Camp, a modest tented camp perched at the meeting point of the reserve’s four great wildlife circuits.
Its thirteen Nyati tents and handful of family cottages, built from local wood and stone in the traditional Kenyan style, have hosted generations of safari-goers drawn by front-row access to the Great Migration and by the camp’s long-standing ties to neighbouring Maasai villages. Now that chapter is closing and a far grander one is about to begin.
Marasa Africa Lodges has confirmed that Mara Leisure Camp will shut its doors for a full rebuild, reopening in early 2027 as Mara Ardhi, ahead of migration season.
The name, drawn from the Swahili word for “earth,” signals the intent behind the project: a lodge shaped by, and answerable to, the land it sits on.
South African architect Hesse Kleinhoog, known for letting buildings recede into their landscapes rather than announce themselves, is leading the redesign.
Expect low-slung eco tents and cottages with private decks, passive cooling and interiors built from natural, locally sourced materials alongside a new restaurant, a conservation education centre, and expanded partnerships with Maasai communities and conservation groups working to protect the region’s migration corridors.
James T Scott, Director of Tourism at Marasa Africa Lodges, frames it as more than a rebrand: “Mara Ardhi is not simply a new name or a new look it is a new covenant with the land.
We are committed to delivering an experience that is luxurious, deeply authentic, and genuinely transformative, for our guests, for the Maasai people, and for the wildlife of the Mara.”
