Uganda, Mozambique Seek Stronger Tourism, Trade and Investment Ties

Uganda is seeking to deepen its tourism, trade and investment relations with Mozambique as the two countries explore new opportunities for business partnerships and economic cooperation.

The initiative was highlighted during the Explore Uganda Tourism Roadshow held in Maputo on October 8, 2026, and an Independence Day reception on October 10, organised by the Uganda High Commission in Dar es Salaam, which is also accredited to Mozambique.

The engagements coincided with Uganda’s 64th Independence anniversary celebrations and aimed to promote the country as a tourism destination while attracting investment from Mozambican businesses.

Uganda showcased its diverse tourism attractions, including mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla national parks, the Source of the Nile, the Rwenzori Mountains, wildlife parks and the country’s cultural heritage.

The roadshow brought together government officials, tourism agencies, tour operators, airlines and hospitality businesses to explore partnerships, develop travel packages and improve connectivity between the two countries.

The engagements also provided a platform for businesses to identify areas of mutual interest and strengthen commercial links between Uganda and Mozambique.

Uganda is inviting Mozambican investors to explore opportunities in agro-processing, manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, infrastructure, information and communication technology, renewable energy and tourism.

At the same time, Ugandan businesses are being encouraged to explore the Mozambican market and take advantage of potential opportunities for cross-border trade and investment.

Historic ties underpin economic cooperation

The renewed engagement also highlighted the longstanding historical relationship between Uganda and Mozambique, including Mozambique’s support for Uganda’s liberation movement.

The two countries share historical links dating back to the 1970s, when fighters associated with Uganda’s Front for National Salvation (FRONASA) trained at Montepuez in Cabo Delgado Province, Mozambique, in 1976.

The historical connection provides a foundation for continued diplomatic engagement as both countries seek to expand cooperation beyond political relations into tourism, commerce and investment.

Focus shifts to practical opportunities

The tourism roadshow and Independence reception reflect Uganda’s efforts to translate its diplomatic relationships into practical economic benefits through increased visitor numbers, business partnerships and investment.

Improved cooperation between tourism operators, airlines and hospitality businesses could also help create more travel opportunities between the two countries and encourage the development of joint tourism packages.

As Uganda pursues its economic transformation agenda, stronger relations with Mozambique offer a potential avenue for expanding market access, attracting investment and promoting private-sector collaboration.

The success of the engagements will depend on how the discussions translate into concrete business partnerships, investment commitments and increased tourism exchanges between the two countries.
